Program Overview
ITRI-NTRC research programs aim to enhance the competitive position
of local industries by building on their existing strength and
exploring new opportunities. Given the modest size of our economy
and resources, we have to be selective in our effort. We seek
to develop a platform of nanomaterials and diagnostic/processing
technology, which in turn will support a number of industry-facing
major applications including nanoelectronics, multi-scale packaging,
advanced displays, nanophotonics, high-density data storage, energy
applications, traditional industry applications, and biomedical
applications. Ten identified major thrusts and their common threads
are shown below.

We will pursue goals of different horizons using a 20+/60/20- approach, i. e.,
| 20+ |
Approximately 20 percent of program resources
going to immediate applications, mostly in the traditional
industries. |
| 60 |
60 percent going to major technological
frontiers crucial to the competitiveness of Taiwan’s
technology industries; aimed at “orders of magnitude”
advances. |
| 20- |
20 percent going to cutting edge R&D;
aimed at building nanotechnology competencies that may become
vital for future applications. |
